Hunting season approaches.

Autumn colors

I finally found the place so I could change the language on the dash board here in my blog, I want to be sure that I understand what all things means in here. I´m rather good in english but computer words is something I barley understands in swedish. But to my surprise I noticed that most of the computer words we use actually are the original english words 🙂 🙂 🙂 So not much help at all  in changing the language  🙂 Well, I´ll figure out things sooner or later anyway.

The moose hunt starts here in southern Sweden on Monday morning. That means that there will be more traffic in the early morning when I go to work than there is in the afternoon when I´m driving home again. There will also most likely be lots of panicking moose, deers and wild hogs running around on the roads too. Not a fun situation to drive in when it is totally dark outside too.

Migrating Trumpet swans

I will keep out of the forest before the hunting period starts and until it´s over in this neighborhood. So until then You´ll mostly see autumn color photos here.

But I´m not complaining about the hunt itself. Sweden is said to have more moose than any other country in comparison to its size. We have around 400 000 moose here in the summer and up to 100 000 is shot every year. If we didn´t have this hunting season they would soon eat all there is to eat and most of them would soon starve to death and/or get nasty diseases.

As I said, most hunters are up early and are on their places when the sun goes up, but not here in the village. They are usually quite late and take their cars as close as possible to the place they are going to stay at 🙂 I don´t think that they really care if they get a moose or not. Mostly these people just love being out in to the nature and afterwards they sit in an old caravan telling each other about  the big animals they almost shot 🙂 🙂

If it was the hunting itself they liked most there´s plenty of other things allowed now too, like the different deers we have and naturally the wild hogs. But it is the moose that is important, we do call it “the king of the forest” here in this country.

I´m having a fire in the stove and my cup of tea has turned cold so I´ll have to make a new pot now. It´s SciFi night on channel six, but I´ll get to bed rather early today, because I will be busy tomorrow. So most likely I´ll post my blog later than usual on a Saturday tomorrow. But since most of You that reads this little blog of mine lives on the American continent it might be ready when You get up in the morning. I´at least six hours before you in time 🙂

Have a great day now!

  1. Hi Christer!

I’m wondering if you have ever come across a wild hog out on one of your walks, up close and personal? Here they get rather large and can be dangerous.

    Peace,
    Chris………….

    • Hi Chris!
I actually met my first hog when I helped during a moose hunt. I wondered if it was a locomotive that crossed my path 🙂 🙂 it was huge and fast, but luckily for me it got scared by my dogs 🙂 My dogs however never noticed that big animal 🙂

They do get rather large here too, but they prefer to run away if they can. But I wouldn´t want to meet a sow with small piglets, because they attack before asking if we are dangerous.

      Have a great day now!
      Christer.

  2. The photos are larger and the detail is even better over here Christer. I think you will like it here. Don’t forget to hide all the Moose in your barn before the actual shoot day. The Moose are counting on you this year. So am I.

    • Hi Z&M!
That´s what I like the most over here! They are big enough to see all details so that there´s no need to make them larger.
My garage door is always unlocked and our moose (I think we only have one here now) knows this. She will be safe this year too 🙂 🙂 🙂

      Have a great day now!
      Christer.

  3. How big are the moose, Christer? The pictures are gorgeous over here… Wonder what that means re Blogger… Did you have to get a new server for the photos? I’m using Picasa on Blogger… Will they transfer?… Now, you’ve made me want a cup of tea…

    • Hi Sharlene!
A moose bull can weigh up to 500 kg, that would be around 1100 pound. Ours are slightly smaller than the ones living on Your continent. Have no idea what re blogger means! Where do You find that?

I think it´s a new server I download my photo to now, but I haven´t seen the name of it anywhere. It works and that´s all that counts 🙂 🙂

A cup of tea is never wrong 🙂
      Have a great day now!
      Christer.

      • Blogger was the application for your previous blog and you didn’t really care for the way the pictures were being displayed… I just wondered if that was a Blogger platform problem that got corrected in WordPress… I need to switch over but haven’t found the courage, yet, for transferring everything…

      • Hi again 🙂
The big difference by the two is that here I can make the photographs big from the beginning. No need for any one to enlarge them any more. The big problem on blogger was that their downloading program for photographs didn´t work after they had changed system. I actually thinks that it´s much the same system here with the difference thet it works here 🙂 🙂 🙂

But the dash board is very different here from blogger. This place takes some more time to understand, blogger is really easy to understand. But I do like it here and I think You won´t regret a move to Word Press! I´ve decided to let the old blog be the end of my time there, so I´ve decided not to import anything from the old blog at all.

        Have a great day now!
        Christer.

  4. I understand why they have to hunt. That they need to thin down the population or they would all get sick and starve…. but it still makes me sad. I would think that someone would have to kill something with a heavy heart and not get any happiness out of it but unfortunately they call it a sport over here. To me, a sport would be when the other side is running towards you trying to kill you too, not running away.

I got a comment from you today that said you kept getting “error”. But none of the other comments have made it. 😦

    • Hi Cindi!
We don´t call it a sport over here thankfully, but it has been a way to survive here in the countryside so I don´t think any one has a heavy hart to be honest 🙂
I do agree with Your way of looking at it as a sport!

I´ll come back and try to comment over at Yours later today!

      Have a great day now!
      Christer.

  5. Wow! The photos are better over here, after all! Much clearer, better detail, and much larger!

I wonder if those hunters actually eat the moose they kill? I don’t like the idea of shooting anything, but I believe that if you kill something, you have to make it’s life count for something at least – and that means not wasting it.
I love wild venison and used to enjoy it every year (California USA), but since you don’t see much of it here in Australia, I can’t even bring myself to buy the “farmed” variety.

    • Hi Tatersmama!
Yes they do eat it all! Nothing on the animal goes to waste thankfully. The farmed variety is never the same thing so i understand how You feel about that.

      Have a great day now!
      Christer.

  6. Hi Christer,
I love the photo of the dogs looking down the road. It looks so inviting.

I used to have a horse and riding during hunting season was always very tricky. I boarded the horse at a barn near a wildlife reserve that allowed hunting so even if we were riding in the paddock, it was possible that someone would mistake us for a deer. The horse and I wore as much hunting orange as I could find. And the horse wore a necklace of sleigh bells. With all of that I have still had spent shot bounce off my riding helmet. The hunter apologized. He thought we were a goose. An extremely large, bright orange, jingling goose. 😉

Have a great day and be careful in the woods til moose season is over.

    • Hi Caryn!
That is my favorite photo today too. I was hoping they had seen the fox I missed last time, but it was my neighbor with her dogs (Basenji´s) out walking.

I´m not sure how I would have reacted towards that hunter if that had happened to me 🙂 🙂 🙂 Good thing it was birds he was out hunting since those bullets looses strength after a while. I have been in a similar situation. I lived in a small cottage just beside a small pond eleven years ago. One day when I opened my door and let the dogs out I heard the sound from a gun and suddenly gun hail were bouncing on my roof!!!!

It was a poacher out there shooting after ducks and he must have thought it was a duck he heard when I opened the door. But after I started shouting things to him and he saw me running towards him screaming what I would do to him when I reached him, he ran to his car and disappeared 🙂 🙂 🙂

I will stay out of the forest until they are finished 🙂
      Have a great day now!
      Christer.

  7. Hello Christer
Yeah I agree with Cindi, my heart sank at the thought of these little animals being hunted, I know that it is culture, tradition. I know, I’m not a vegetarian. Finally, many opniões and point of views, but it makes me strangely.
I would give food and cuidadno patients. heheheheeheh
Your photos really gained a presentation at the height of their beauty, in this blog
Take care with the hunters !!!!!!
    Andrea

    • Hi Andrea!
Well, they aren´r exactly small 🙂 🙂 A moose bull can weigh up to 500 kg 🙂 🙂 Since we have very little wolves that can hunt them down here we do have to hunt them ourselves. Lots of people die every year because they hit them with their cars and sometimes angry moose attack us humans too. I love the taste of the meat, but I can´t shoot them myself.

I like that I can make the photos so big here 🙂

I´ll stay out of the forest until the hunting is over and that is some time next week in this village.

      Have a great day now!
      Christer.

  8. Hi Christer, really enjoyed this post with the fall colors and describing the moose hunt. Soon, deer hunting wou will start on the VA eastern shore and most likely other places as well. I know what you mean about the need to thin out the moose (and deer too) but could never imagine hunting these animals (or any others) myself. Forgot to ask about the little greenhouse in yesterday’s post. It looks identical to the one that Grenville set up in our yard this spring. Is it yours?

    • Hi Beatrice!
The deer hunt has already started here, but we don´t have many deers now days. So that´s easy to keep an eye at. I´m just the same, I understand that they have to thin them out, but I can´t do it myself.

It is my neighbors green house. I want to have one myself but they are expensive to buy and I´m not the most handy man You can find, so I´m not sure I would try to build one myself 🙂 🙂 🙂

      Have a great day now!
      Christer.

  9. Hi there Christer, finally remembered to bookmark your blog, and am glad to see your beautiful autumn pictures again. Please do stay safe with moose hunters all around. Keep the stove going and the tea hot! Like your new blog place.

    • Hi Robin!
I´m trying to figure out how to bookmark blogs here in Word Press, but I haven´t come that far yet. I know that it´s possible but not how 🙂

I´ll keep out of the forest until the hunt is over here in the village and that is some time next week.

I like it here too 🙂
      Have a great day now!
      Christer.

  10. Hi Christer – I have been behind in checking in this week and wondered where your posts were! So glad I kept scrolling down my list till I came to this! I love it!!! The pictures are gorgeous – so much better than on the old blog… 🙂 They are bigger than my little laptop screen so I will look at them at my office to truly appreciate the detail. But the one with the two dogs on each side of the road, and the road going off behind them is stunning. So inviting. WordPress tells me it is No.9 when I leave the mouse over it!
Have a great weekend! It is Thanksgiving weekend here for us in Canada – that means a big turkey dinner Sunday with the most family members who can make it – a great time to see some you don’t get to see all year. And of course Monday off work which is always nice! Even for those of us who are self-employed it is a day off we need – that big dinner takes a day to recuperate from!
    Alice

    • Hi Alice!
I do like that I can make the photos so big already in the blog!
That is my favorite photo today too! I haven´t named my photos so that was the ninth photo I took on our walk 🙂 🙂

So it´s Thanksgiving in Canada! Nothing we have over here at all. I think I would like that if for nothing else than to have a free day from work 🙂 🙂 We have no holidays in autumn here in Sweden.

I can imagine it will take a day or two to recuperate from a dinner like that 🙂 🙂
      Have a great day now!
      Christer.

      Christer.

  12. I found you! 🙂

Glad you like your new ‘home’. Some great pictures, as usual. Really enjoy seeing the seasons change there. I hope to go for a walk today to the park to take some pictures here as well.

Sorry I haven’t been by often, life has been a little crazy. Think of you, though! Hope you’re well.

    • Hi Perovskia!
Nice to see You here 🙂
To be honest, I have had troubles making time to visit all my blog friends too! I´m way behind in visiting I´m afraid! I´ll pop over to You later today 🙂
      Have a great day now!
      Christer.
