And off she went like a bullet from a gun.

The little sunshine we've had today helped to open up the hepatica🙂

The sun tries to shine through the clouds but it seems it’s a loosing battle. But there’s no wind and it is the warmest day so far this year so it is rather nice outdoors. We walked through the village this morning and I looked up to the sky so I could see eventual cranes flying towards the lake. I unleashed my dogs when we were as far from the houses as we could be, I always have my dogs leashed close to houses since I don’t know who’s afraid of dogs.

Those big lumps up in the trees are Magpie nests. Even though one often can see through them the rain never gets in. I really don't understand why not🙂

Manure ready to be spread over the fields. I think I'll ask for some to put in my composts.

I really don’t know what’s wrong with hares. We weren’t even close to it (perhaps 100 meters, much the same in yards), we weren’t even walking towards it but still it had to start running in front of us!!! Unfortunately Nova saw it before my and off she went. I shouted as loud as I could and I saw that she heard me, then she decided that she really didn’t need to care about what i said and continued to run after that damn hare!

Memories from the good old times when they had dairy cows on this farm.

Well the hare was both faster and smarter than Nova so she came back already after three minutes, but she did come from one of the more grumpy farmers property so I was expecting a  rather unpleasant telephone call all morning🙂🙂🙂 But thankfully it seems as if they were busy with their animals all morning and never noticed her running around there.

I had hoped that she too could walk around without a leash all summer like the boys can but now I must have her leashed from now until autumn again. A hare is just to fast for her but what happens if she runs in to a deer youngling?  So I better start looking for a longer leash otherwise we two will drive each other crazy after a while🙂🙂🙂

It was over these fields Nova ran away. She came dangerously close to the big road but there's almost no traffic on Sundays. But if this happens one more time there might actually be traffic there.

I have found all but one fish dead in the pond now, they all were caught in the ice and very few fish can survive that. But we have a relative to the goldfish in our waters that can so I’m thinking of finding a couple of those instead. I really need something in the pond that eats mosquito larvae and horse fly larvae, we have enough of those as it is🙂🙂

It is time for another walk before all the animals will get their food, it’s so nice outside that I’ll only have to wear a sweater🙂 I love this time of year!

Have a great day!

  1. Hi Christer,
Hares must be chased. It’s The Law.🙂

I have a heavy duty Flexi-Lead for tracking dogs. It’s about 25 feet long and very sturdy. Mine is actually one of the first ones marketed in the US and is about 20 years old. The only problem is that I have to hold on to the case that the leash retracts into and that’s sometimes an annoyance. I have a loop attached to mine so it can hang from my wrist or a belt clip. I just have to be aware when the dog takes off so that I don’t get pulled over by the force of 17 pounds of running animal hitting the end of the leash at a dead run.😀
The other things I have used for long dog leads are plastic boat rope and nylon parachute shock cord. The plastic boat rope is braided and can be spliced like normal rope. It’s lightweight and it floats so the dog can go in the water and the line won’t sink and snag on something. The parachute cord is very thin, like heavy knitting yarn, but it’s very light and strong. It can be rolled up and put in my coat pocket. I have braided it to make shorter, wider leashes.
If you don’t want to mess with making your own, you can ask the horse owners if they have an extra lunge line that you can buy or you can get them from horse/farm supply stores. Lunge lines are about 10 meters long which gives the dog a 20 meter diameter circle in which to roam. They have a hand loop at one end and a heavy clip at the other. I put another heavy clip on the loop and clip it to my belt. Same caution applies about being pulled over by a running dog.🙂

I read your Swedish blog this morning and I have to say that your English is way better than Google Translate.🙂 It said Nova ran through “the worst peasant land” which gives a slightly different picture than “grumpy farmer’s property”.🙂

It’s a lovely spring day here. I’m making corned beef and cabbage because I didn’t do it yesterday on St Patrick’s Day. Later I will go out and hack up the vicious roses. It’s a good day to get scratched up.🙂 Enjoy your day.

    • Hi Caryn!

This time it would have been nice if she had broken the law🙂🙂🙂

I was thinking in the lines You mention and I can use that out on the fields, it would be a terrible mess if I used it in the forest🙂🙂🙂 I have made my boys leashes but I made them short since they usually don’t have to use them.
🙂🙂🙂 It is really bad when they run through the worst peasant land🙂🙂🙂 I just love Google translate🙂🙂🙂 but I have to say its getting better than it used to be. I once translated a swedish text to english with the help of Google and then I did it again back to swedish and I can say that it was a completely different text🙂🙂🙂

Those roses aren’t fun to deal with! I’m slowly digging them up one by one here in my garden and I always bleed afterwards.

Have a fun time with those roses🙂

  2. I guess the lure of that speeding hare was just too much for Nova today. I know you were hoping you could keep her off-leash. Drat that bunny!! It is absolutely gorgeous weather here today, what a treat!!! Definitely a good day for long walks! Take care!

    • Hi Robin!
Yes unfortunately it was. She has ignored many hares these weeks but this one knew what it was doing. I just can’t understand why it did like this? It must be better to just stay where it is when we not even were close or walking towards it!

The clouds cover our sky again but it is still rather warm🙂
      Have a great day!

  3. beautiful photos this morning, we never had to leash our dog when we lived on the farm, I guess he was a lucky dog, never knew a leash. Now having said that he was , sprayed by skunk, twice, and porkupine quills in his nose once, he learned his lesson. If we had a dog now he would be trained for a lead, for his safety and ours. When we moved into the city he was 16 years old, an old man dog, he walked by my side on the side walks as well. If he was younger I suppose I woiuld have had big trouble.
Thats a big manure pile, wonderful for your gardens.Enjoy your day, well I guess your day is almost over , ours is just beginning.

    • Hi Laurie!
My boys doesn’t need a leash either but I use it when we’re walking pass homes just in case they are afraid of dogs. If we’ve had skunks or porkupines here I most certainly would have big problems🙂🙂 My dogs would never learn either🙂🙂

I think I’ll ask fort some of that manure so I can put it in my compsts. Works wonders in there🙂

      Have a great day!

  4. hi christer! well, better to be safe than sorry with nova. i let my last chow off leash all the time and it resulted in two acl tears and surgeries. teddy is never off leash out of our property. oh that reminds me…i have to check what you had to say about the grapes! i have so much work to do that i don’t know where to start. it is still really hot here. joyce

    • Hi Joyce!
Yes that’s true even if i don’t like having to do that. She really is a good girl but I can’t risk her killing any young animals.

The boys behave as they should though but i remember their mother, old Erna. She almost got hit by the same mailman three times at the same day, she hated to drive in my neighborhood after that🙂🙂🙂

Take breaks in all that work as well!

  5. Vilka underbara foton!

  6. It’s that hunter that dominates the breed. Keep trying. Lovely photo, almost like a painting, of the old shack with the two trees blending in around it. I now have all four feral cats on my office window sill each morning waiting for the chef to bring out breakfast. !!

    • Hi Z&M!
Yes terriers do like to hunt I’m afraid but I was hoping the border collie part in her would take over instead🙂 Well other terriers can walk without a leash on and so will Nova eventually🙂

Those feral cats of Yours are lucky ones🙂

      Have a great day!

  7. sigh, the thrill of the hunt got the best of poor Nova.😦
and she had been doing so well!
You are wise to leash her, it would be awful to have her capture something defenseless.
Blue caught that squirrel that had been taunting him.
Caught it and killed it and left it. I didn’t see it happen but he’s the only one that has ever come close, so I almost 100% sure it was him.
I discovered it out in the yard… Griffin was munching off the end of his tail!
Ugh! between Griffin eating the “poop” treats and now chowing on squirrel tail….really grosses me out.
    Dogs will be dogs, but…

    • Hi Cindi!
Yes it just got to much for her🙂

I’m not sure what Nova would do if she actually did catch a hare🙂 I know she kills and eats all the voles she gets but a hare is just so much bigger🙂🙂🙂 She’s not smart enough to catch a squirrel though🙂

Yes dogs will be dogs🙂 I just wish I never noticed when they did things like that🙂🙂🙂

      Have a great day!
