Living in a winter wonderland.

This poor little spruce have been standing in a pot for at least five years and weeds have been growing all over it. I think I'll keep it in a pot another year or so but I will take better care of it, One day I'll plant it in my garden, I just don't know where yet 🙂 More decorations will be put in it if I can find small enough objects.

The snow started to fall late yesterday evening and it still falls here over the village. I can’t say I’m happy about it but here it is and I can’t do anything about it. It will stay for a couple of days they say but rain will come before Yule so I guess it will be a snow free holiday.

I didn’t think any hunters would go out today (and I was right) so we walked down to the creek like we usually do on Saturdays. I was hoping to see some kind of tracks in the snow but it seems both humans and animals kept calm this morning 🙂 Bertil followed us like he always does and he didn’t like it at all. He complained all the time and I think he doesn’t like that place since we got followed last week. He stopped complaining as soon as we got out to the open fields.

We did finally see a deer but that’s all. We were out walking for over two hours and it was rather nice as long as we stayed out of the wind. After we had walked by the creek we continued on our walk to the village. Not a single track most of the part, not from any humans, animals or cars. The snow dampens the sounds so it felt like we were totally alone in the world, at least until the plowman came with his tractor and plowed the roads.

Later on we walked out to the bog and on our way home I saw two big doglike animals running around on the fields. They were way to far for me to see what they were but I could see that they were to big to be foxes. So finally I thought I had seen the wolf/es I thought we had in the forest! But no, it is just those dogs that keeps coming to my neighbors all the time 🙂 🙂 I met the owner at my neighbor’s home, this time she was sober! so I told her where they were and went home a bit disappointed 🙂 🙂 🙂

I’ve started to decorate my tiny and rather ugly little yule tree. Unfortunately I can’t plug in the lights because I don’t have any more electrical extension cords in the house 🙂 🙂 It is the place it will stand on but I will decorate on that table as well. Now I only have to go to the supermarket and buy yet another cord 🙂 🙂

This is from a series of children's story books about Aunt Brown, aunt Green and aunt Mauve, the man is uncle Blue but I can never remember the names on the children. Not my favorites when I was a kid 🙂

Have a great day!

  1. Det är “kul” med juldekorationer! Ibland blir man lite trött på dom här elektriska grejorna som alltid går sönder, men våra LED-grejor verkar hålla betydligt bättre än dom vi haft tidigare. 🙂

  2. Hi Christer,

Obviously the children are named Nephew Vert and Niece Plaid. 🙂
Who the heck would put a bow on a dog’s tail and expect it to remain there?

Bertil looks very alert and on the prowl.

Your photos look like they were taken through blue glass. It’s kind of cool though it probably gets old after many days of it.

The snow flurries didn’t arrive after all but there is a snow alert out for Cape Cod which is south of me. I’m happy there is no snow in my forecast because I haven’t found a replacement for the guy who used to plow my driveway. Maybe I will just drive over the stuff and hope the mountain of ice chunks that the town plows leave across the end of the drive doesn’t rip something off the bottom of my jeep.

Enjoy your snow and the rest of your day.

    • Hi Caryn!
🙂 🙂 Unfortunately not 🙂 I heard their names yesterday and it was something more common 🙂 🙂 Elsa Beskow must have known very little about dogs 🙂 🙂 🙂 I know that bow wouldn’t stay two seconds on any of my dogs 🙂 🙂

Yes I’m already tired of the blue light the snow creates, I did think of making them black&white or sepia but I’ll wait a couple of weeks doing that 🙂

So Kat will get snow today then, she will probably love it 🙂 But I hope You can find a replacement before it starts to fall over Your area. I rarely get rid of the snow in front of my garage, I just drive over it several times when ever I can, usually works good but not all the time 🙂 🙂

      Have a great day!

  4. Have you kept the tree indoors in the pot? I think thats a marvelous idea.I had a Norfolk pine for years but it became to large and gave it away when we moved. It would have made a wonderful Yule tree.
The owners of the running dogs are not very caring, they might have them shot running around with the hunters in the bush., or the wolves may take them.We have many many wolves here and Coyotes as well. The wolves are much more elusive, the coyotes are seen often and don’t run when you drive by if they are in a field, and I see them crossing the ice regularly in March. The wolves are rarely seen but heard, we can here them on the chase of deer and its a chilling sound.
I think your tree is lovely and I would much rather have a small real tree than a large fake tree anyday.
Since moving to this place we have a ceramic tree, no room for the real ones anymore.Have a wonderful Sunday in your beautiful winter wonderland.

    • Hi Laurie!
Normnally I have it outdoors all year but I placed it in my cool cellar this autumn so it got used to more dry indoor air. I’ll keep on doing like that umtil I either find the right place to plant it in the garden or it gets to big.

The problem with the owners of those dogs is that they are alchoholics. I know they love their dogs and they do care much, but it isn’t easy to know what one does when being drunk most of the time. I would gladely adopt one of them if it wasn’t for the fact that my dogs hates them. Wouldn’t be a good start for a new dog in the family 🙂

We don’t have coyotes here, only foxes. But I have heard a wolf howling on the bog some years ago. It was very easy to understand that it wasn’t a dog doing that 🙂 🙂 🙂

I photographed the side of that spruce where it actually has branches 🙂 🙂 But it will look better when I start caring more, perhaps even prune it some 🙂 My cottage is too small for a bigger tree too.

      Have a great day!

  5. hi christer! it looks so beautiful. i love how the snow silences everything. maybe i like snow so much because of how quiet the city becomes! we got about an inch of snow here last night too. it will melt though because it is about to warm up. i am counting on lots of snow in the new year! bertil always looks so serious! joyce

    • Hi Joyce!
It is a difference with the snow even here, in autumn when the leafs are falling I suddenly can hear the traffic again. Today it couldn’t be heard at all 🙂

Congrats to the snow 🙂 We will have it here for a couple of days but then it will get milder again.

      Have a great day!

  6. Christer, I regret to inform you that as much as you hate it, your photos are beautiful. I think it is the presence of so many variaties of evergreens, with the snow softly settled on the branches. It is amusing that Bertil is so driven to accompany you on your walks, even though he obviously is very bitter about the snow. Such a complainer, that one! I like your little spruce very much (dare I say, almost dwarf-like spruce, lol!). You must be going crazy with the thought of more electrical cords! We received one little inch of snow yesterday. But it was 7 degrees F this morning. Too cold for me~!! Enjoy the day and love to the family.

    • Hi Robin!
🙂 But I do like snow, in photographs 🙂 🙂

I think it was the place we passed rather thna the snow that upset him. No one of the dogs reacted but he remebered last week. Normally he seems to like snow even if it is this deep.

Yes my little spruce is like a dwarf 🙂 Not like Your Alberta though 🙂 🙂

I am a bit tired of electrical cords at the moment 🙂 🙂 So this will be the last one I buy for a long time 🙂 🙂

I don’t mind if it is that cold actually, just as long as there isn’t any snow 🙂

      Have a great day!

  7. I’ll bet the tiny tree is happy to get all dressed up for the holidays!

I’m surprised that the kitty will go out in the snow at all! It is a pretty sight to look at, but I don’t want to be out in it!

    • Hi Jim!
Well I’m not so sure about that, it might die because the air is to dry. But I’ll put it down in the cool cellar if I notice anything like that happening.

He had problems last winter when the snow was deep all the time, but he likes it when it isn’t more snow than this 🙂 I do like snow in photographs but I don’t like it when it falls where I live 🙂

      Have a great day!

  8. I think the tree is beautiful. It yearns to be in the forrest there, in that wonderful winter wonderland. The photos just make me crave for the cold north with lots of snow. A Floridian who misses snow. That’s me. Thanks for the charming photos. Love the one also of your little tiger.

    • Hi Z&M!
I only show the side with branches 🙂 🙂 But it will get a place in my garden sooner or later, probably later 🙂

I do think snow is beautiful in photographs but I rather not have it where I live 🙂

      Have a greta day!

  9. Christer,
I love your little tree and think it beautiful.

The snow looks beautiful, but I am glad it’s there and not here.Gracie loves snow and romps all over the yard when it covers the ground. She would love running up and down your road, but she is like Nova and won’t come back.

    • Hi Kat!
It doesn’t have that many brabches on the other side though 🙂 🙂

It is beautiful in photograps snow 🙂 it is only problems otherwise 🙂

Nova is getting better in coiming back now though 🙂 She followed some deers tracks and got rather far before I noticed it, but came straight back when I called for her 🙂 I’m not sure she would have if she actually had seen the deers though 🙂 🙂 🙂

      Have a great day!

  10. Christer, as much as you profess to all of us not to like snow, the fact is you can’t escape it living where you do 🙂 Just reading this post about walking in the snow makes me wish we had that to look forward to here. We may get a little snow sometime this winter, but not at Christmas as we did last December. Folks here think we are crazy for telling them we miss seeing the snow like we used to see when we lived in New Jersey. They think we are even crazier when we tell them we would like to move to New England. Your little tree may not look like much to you, but thankfully it is a real tree. We have a very small one this year – compared to other years – and we are just as happy with it. It took much less decorating and only 1 string of 100 lights. We tried the LED ones this year, but still prefer the older smaller lights. They may not be as energy efficient, but the colors seem brighter to us.

    • Hi Beatrice!
No, no escaping 🙂 🙂 I wouldn’t mind if it got cold though, You know that cold so all trees and bushes would get covered in thick rime. It is so much easier to drive then than in snow but it still would become white outside 🙂

Yes it is a real tree and I will cvare better for it so it will look better next year. I really can’t have a big tree here, my cottage is so small I wouldn’t be able to move around here 🙂 🙂

      Have a great day!

  11. As usual, your photos take my breath away — but, I’m soooooo glad we haven’t had snow, here! That’s a great photo of Bertil looking his most earnest! I’ve missed quite a few of your posts and will catch up, but I’ve been very busy trying to get gifts finished for Christmas. But, I wanted to wish you a very Merry Christmas and hope you’ll get some wonderful surprises. Now, on to your older posts…

    • Hi S harlene!
I know You’ve been busy and I think You love it 🙂 🙂

Snow is beautiful in photographs 🙂 But I’d rather have Your climate to be honest 🙂

      Have a great day!

  12. That poor little spruce 🙂 Please plant it this/next year. I’m surprised he’s survived all this time!

The snow is beautiful. We’re also scheduled for a green Christmas, sadly (I don’t always need snow, but Christmas isn’t Christmas without snow 🙂 ).

    The horses.. oooh.. ahhh… 🙂

    *pets the Bertil*

    • Hi Perovskia!
I can’t promise I’ll plant it next year 🙂 But I can promise it will get a bigger pot and I will care better for it. This summer I won’t allow it to get covered in weeds 🙂

It would be nice with a thin layer of snow at christmas but it can melt away the day after. No need for it to stay when it isn’t wanted 🙂

      Have a greta day!

  13. I just “pinned” Bertil again. Love that cat.
Love all the photos especially the one with the horses out in the field by the barn?
Cute little tree, maybe just put shiny bright ornaments on it and you wouldn’t have to string any lights!
    Or get another cord. 😀

    • Hi Cindi!
That cat should know how much You all like him. If I know him right he wouldn’t like it for a second 🙂 🙂 🙂
I guess that is a barn, but it can be anything really 🙂

I couldn’t find any tiny eanough shiny ornaments for my little Yule tree 🙂 A cord has been bought and now the tree shines 🙂

      Have a greta day!
