Problem dogs or problem owners?

It is already dark outside and it looks like we will have fog tomorrow. I could see it out on the bog when we walked there after work and now it looks like we’re having it out on the fields as well. I love fog as long as I don’t have to drive in it 🙂 But I doubt it will stay especially long, strong winds and rain is predicted for tomorrow.

We went out to the bog this afternoon.

We met two neighbors on their way to hunt deers when we were out walking yesterday morning. They had a small dog and they had no problems with the dogs saying hir to each other, many hunters doesn’t like that on hunting days. They asked what breeds my dogs are and I love to see people reactions when I say that Nova is half Pitbull 🙂 🙂 🙂

This is one of the few grasses I know that get autumn colors. I have it in my garden too 🙂

The last of the Buttercups.

I’m not a fan of pitbulls and think that they never should have been created, but now I have one myself anyway 🙂 Most people think that all pitbulls attack as soon as they can and it is nice to see how they have changed their minds after meeting Nova that mostly behaves like a silly puppy when meeting other dogs 🙂 🙂 🙂  (but she does have a bloody temper if she gets angry, something I need to remember). Every now and again some political party says we should forbid certain kinds of breeds just because they can be dangerous. That’s just crap to be honest, they should however forbid some people to have any kind of dog!

I didn't take many photographs today but luckily for me I have saved some from earlier walks 🙂 I think this is the entrance to a forest mouse home.

The last of the dragonflies?

Any dog can be a deadly weapon (well perhaps not dogs in the size of a chihuahua). So I usually asks people that wants to forbid certain breeds what we should do with the daxhound. Normally they say I’m stupid even mentioning that breed. What most people don’t know is that daxhounds have the strongest jaws of all dogs. If they first bite a chunk from Your leg and You fall, the throat could be the next target. I doubt they would laugh about daxhounds then 🙂 🙂 🙂

They have already forbidden some breeds in Denmark and appartement building owners have forbidden even more breeds in their houses. Some of those breeds I just can’t understand why though, like English bulldog and Bedlington terrier? But I wouldn’t mind if they demanded license to own a dog. That would most probably clean out those that treats dogs like Nova was treated.

Nightshade berries.

It is time for a cup of tea and a couple of sandwiches. There’s a fire in the stove and the America clock is ticking loudly on the kitchen wall. I love that sound but it makes me sleepy 🙂 🙂  Only four days left till it all ends 🙂 🙂 🙂                                                                                                              Have a great day!

  1. You will be sadly disappointed come this Friday. I believe it’s Friday there before here so you’ll have to give a shout if something happens to you. Any dog trained to go after a stranger will do so. Labs are friendly until you meet one trained to kill. I even had a bad experience with a Dobberman. His owner put the dog down because of it.

    • Hi Z&M!
So You do belive ha actually can be wrong one more time 🙂 🙂 🙂 But I promise that if I would notice anything special I´ll mail You or send a message on Facebook 🙂 🙂 🙂

You are so true about dangerous dogs! It is how we handle and train the dogs that makes them dangerous. I’ve met dangerous Doberman’s too but I have also met big kind ones as well just because the owners trained them to be like that.

      Have a great day!
      Christer.

  2. Hi Christer,
Do you mean dachshund? They’re bred to hunt badger which are really mean animals so I assume that dachshunds would be tough guys. And I wouldn’t sell those chihuahuas short either. They have Napoleon complexes, every one of them, and they’d sooner bite you than look at you. The English bull dog used to be a useful, sturdy dog until the show people got hold of it. Now it is a travesty of a dog. Don’t get me started on show breeders. Erghhh.

I didn’t see any dragonflies at the lake today. It’s warm enough but the wind is very brisk and cold so perhaps the windchill factor has gotten to them. Lots of Canada geese and mallards. There was one cormorant drying out on the bow of the municipal row boat. The yacht club took in the sailboat race course floats so the cormorants have no place to sun themselves between fishing dives. I got pictures with my little point and shoot but I sure would have liked to have a good camera with a 200mm lens.

Enjoy your sandwiches and the rest of your day.

    • Hi Caryn!
      Yes I mean dachshund 🙂
I agree that chihuahuas can be nasty little critters but I doubt they could manage to kill a human. Bite of a toe yes 🙂 🙂 I see we have very much the same ideas about show breeders 🙂 🙂 🙂

I was surprised to see a dragon fly here after those really cold nights! But I guess their season will be over shortly now.
Not many geese or cranes left here now except for those that might stay here for the winter, some of them always do.

      Have a great day!
      Christer.

    • Hi Caryn! I tried to click on your name to get an email but it wouldn’t let me, so I’ll just chat with you here. I have a houseful of rescues and one of them is a little Chihuahua. She was taken from a man with anger issues who happened to be throwing her across a parking lot when she was just a puppy. Lucky for her, the Animal Control truck was just pulling into the lot and rescued her. Lucky for me, I got to be her new Mom. She is just the sweetest most loving little thing and her best friend is my BIGGEST rescue, my 170lb deaf Great Dane mix. In fact my very last post was about then both. Here’s a link to it: http://oldblackcatboo.blogspot.com/2011/10/twinkles-great-big-pillow.html
There’s always an exception to every rule! 😀
      Thanks, Cindi

      Christer.

  5. hi christer! i have always thought that people should have to pass a test to be allowed to have pets and have children. we have to pass tests to drive cars! why should just anyone be allowed to raise children and have pets. so many people treat their children and pets horribly! i am surprised to see that the frost has not killed your buttercups! my night shade moves all over my gardens. does yours relocate as well? we are supposed to get snow later this week. i might beat you with snow this year! joyce

    • Hi Joyce!
I agree with You on both cases! Why on earth do people get children and pets if they not even can treat them decent???

I got a bit surprised to see those buttercups too 🙂 I haven’t seen any since late summer 🙂
I have to say that my nightshades stays where they are. I wish they could find more places and I will try to sow some by my pond next year. I guess my garden is to dry for them, here they normally only grows by creeks and ponds.

I do hope You’ll beat us when it comes to snow 🙂 🙂 🙂 Normally we get the first snowfalls here around early November.

      Have a great day!
      Christer.

  6. Don’t say its all going to end it can’t yet. we have a lottery ticket on a draw 5 days away and I have library audio books out for teo more weeks!Your photos are beautiful today more so thatn ever, the new background highlights them even more.Istaht a deer stand I see in the bush?Deer season opened here for bow hunters,, tiem to saty out of the bush. You know I agree with you, some people should be forbidden animals.I do think sometimes we forget that dogs are animals and can be unpredictable,, any breed.

    • Hi Laurie!
Well if honorable Harold Camping says it will end on Friday it most likely will 🙂 🙂 🙂 Because can he really be wrong one more time 🙂 🙂 🙂

I think that stand mostly was for moose, but I´m not sure if it is used any longer. They made the natural reserve bigger last year and I’m not sure its allowed to hunt in there any longer.

I’m not 100% sure but I think that bow hunting is forbidden over here. It has been up for discussion several times though. The risk of injuring the animal instead of killing it is considered to big.

I think a license would be a better choice if they should do anything. Then we might get rid of most people that abuse the animals.

      Have a great day!
      Christer.

  7. You’re right about daschunds, the only time I’ve ever been bitten (in 67 yrs) was by one of these, had to fight it off all the way up the street. Love your photos, so different from Australia. Have been to the Scandinavian countries only once, would like to go again, so I keep on buying lottery tickets, (fate – can you beat it)! I remember sitting in the sun in a park in Helsinki, knitting (always carry some to do) and a news reporter came up to me and popped a microphone under my nose asking me something, had to say in English – “sorry, I’m an Aussie”, whereupon he took the ‘phone away and started asking me all sorts of things about Western Australia, he had been dreaming of going to Geraldton to surf for ages. Hope he made it, he was a lovely young chap.

    • Hi Robyn and welcome to my blog 🙂

The dachshund is the only dog that ever has bitten me as well 🙂 They never quit either when they have set their minds on something 🙂 🙂 But still I love them 🙂

I’m hoping for the lottery too 🙂 But I want to go to Australia instead 🙂 🙂 I have one wish before I die and that si to see a wombat in the wild 🙂 I fell in love with that animal when I was a kid and watched an australian soap on tv. It was about a man that was a vet and his vife? that was a doctor and they had a wombat as a pet 🙂 🙂 🙂 So perhaps we can meet half way 🙂 🙂 🙂

You got lucky with that reporter, most finns are rather bad in english 🙂 Reaiy bad actually 🙂 Must have been fun though 🙂

Have a great day and welcome back!
      Christer.

  8. well, we have talked about this before…
at my job, the Pitbulls are some of my most loving and affectionate boarders. I have some sweet little Dachshunds that come in and are the happiest most playful things but…I’ve had some really growly mean little suckers too! LOL! 😀 😀 😀
I hate to ever put a “label” on any breed but besides little terrified breeds, my biggest “problem” dogs tend to be German Shepherds. Shepherds tend to be a “one person” kind of dog and if the owners don’t socialize them early, well….they can have REAL issues.
As far as my “craziest” boarders, um, well..ha! ….that would have to be the black labs! I don’t know why but not the yellow or chocolate as much as the Black labs. Those dogs tend to “spaz” out more, jumping and drooling and nervous bowels….I’m not saying they are bad, just very anxious when boarding.
    But hey! I love them all! 😀 😀 😀
    Take care, Cindi

    • Hi Cindi!
The problem with pitbulls though is that if they snap they really snap! I coulkd see it here in the beginning when Nova was new here. She didn’t get angry, she got insane. Thankfully Orvar and Hector are big boys and they didn’t care 🙂 🙂 She’s a totally different dog now 🙂

Dachshunds are either pests or wonderful 🙂 But I have never heard anything like that about Labradors though. I know there’s a difference in labs in the US towards those we have here in Europe. Yours are more energetic and they look like they should, here they look squarish and are a bit more calm 🙂 Except when it comes to labs used as hunting dogs, they are more like Yours. The worlds worst dog was an US lab, Marley 🙂 🙂 🙂

      Have a great day!
      Christer.

      • yep, you are right. While Pits can be so loving, if they “snap”, their jaws are so powerful that they can kill in an instant, to say nothing of their muscled bodies. That is why, no matter how sweet the ones I know, would I bring one home as a pet. It’s because I have too many little tiny ones that if a Pitbull even was just “playing”, they could kill my tiny ones. AND if they got into it with BLUE, OMG!….no, I would never risk it. But as a single dog family, Pits can be wonderful.
I personally think that a lot of the “labs” that people have over here are not REALLY all labs. Or I think they have been SO over bred that they have started to have real problems. I think that people don’t realize what the dog “lineage” really has in it. The one Lab that I take care of and ADORE, is low to the ground and has a big blocky head…she’s beautiful. 😀 😀 😀 (but still a little bit crazy! LOL!)

      • If I had had small dogs and found out that Nova is half pitbull she never would have been allowed here. But shje is rather small comapred to a “real” pitbul so I doubt she would have done much damage on adachshundsized dog if she snapped. But she is a very different dog now compared to how she was when she came 🙂

Labs doesn’t have those big problems here, the hips are a problem though. It is the german shepherd that has the biggest problems now.The hunting lab is slightly smaller but looks much better than those they have as show dogs, THey look like they should do 🙂

        Have a great dya!
        Christer.

  9. Hi Christer. This has been an interesting discussion on dogs and breeds. My wounded Basset is home from the vet after a month’s stay and it was due to a fight with a newly fostered 13 yr old girl Pitbull. And guess what- the fight wasn’t caused by the pitbull and though the damage was horrendous to both dogs, it was the pushy little Basset who made the first move. With a Pitbull you can’t make a move without expecting it to be answered.
I love them both very much and wouldn’t think of not keeping the little pit girl, but I don’t have children around and both my husband and I understand now that we have to put her in another room when we aren’t home….he forgot that rule when he was home for lunch and all hell was the result. I don’t think I would have a Pitbull if I had children just because, as you say they go crazy once they GO.
My Bacci (the pit) is one of the most obedient, sweet dogs I’ve ever had and my Basset is slightly better behaved now. Any dog can bite and truth be told, the worst dog I know is our neighbor’s rotten Yorkie who has a full set of awful teeth and she runs charging towards all the dogs and us and wants to attack. I have found the perfect weapon since her owners don’t seem to understand she is terrible…I take a can of compressed air that I use to clean the computer keyboard with me when I go out…one spray and Poof! she runs…no harm, just strange noise.
I continue to find great peace when I visit your blog. Looking forward to this winter’s postings…that is if we are all still here. I hear next week is the REAL iffy date- Oct. 28.
    Fondly,
    Sandy

    • Hi Sandy!
I’m glad they both are better now! Fights happens all dog owners knows that. It’s just that the result becomes so much worse with a pitbul involved. Well if the other dog is just as stubborn and won’t stop it doesn’t help what breed on has 🙂

Lika You I would never have a pitbull if I had children even if the dog most probably would die protecting them. My Nova is also very obedient but if she sees a hare or another small animal she just can’t hear me shout 🙂 🙂 🙂 But she always comes back to the place she ran from (or home) even if it can take an hour or so 🙂 🙂

What a great way to stop that yorkie 🙂 🙂 Unfortunately people that owns small dogs seems to belive that they don’t have to train them to be obedient at all, that’s why so many small dogs are pests. There are of course exeptions but they are few I’m afraid.

I had heard that date too so I got a bit surprised to read that it was today the end would come 🙂 🙂 :-)’

      Have a great day!
      Christer.
