The air is filled with cranes and geese.

The clouds were rather thin this morning promising us a sunny day. I don´t like it when clouds lie 🙂 🙂

We´ve had an unusual warm night, 11C (52F) and the temperature is much the same now. Two days ago they said we were going to have sun today and that a front with rain would come yesterday evening and be gone by now. So I´m not especially surprised that the rain starts now and that the sunshine will come tomorrow instead 🙂 🙂 🙂

We´ve just been outside in the garden, my dogs sniffing around and I scooping up what they have left behind and looking at cranes that passed in the sky on their way to the lake. I was thinking that we should take a walk before the rain came and we had just gone inside to fetch the leashes when it started. It drizzles at the moment but I know it´s pouring down south in Gothenburg. I´ve realized that Nova is really fuzzy when it comes to walk in mud, she almost refused to go in through the gate when we came home earlier this morning. It is a bit muddy in front of the gate because the water can´t get anywhere since the ground still is frozen.

Some geese flew over us, I think this were Canadian Geese.

We have had lots of cranes flying over the village too. All lying photographs will get bigger and hopefully better if You click on them.

And jackdaws were trying to find new chimneys to build nests in 🙂

I´ve looked at the trees and bushes I still have in pots in the garden (they should have been planted already last summer, but I just couldn´t find the right spot for them) and I´m glad to say that my two Red Mulberry trees still are alive 🙂 and so it seems that the Cherry Prinsepia´s are too. If I understand things right it seems I need two red mulberry trees to be certain to get some berries from them, but the problem is that they will grow up to 21 meters high (much the same in yards). Well that will take some time but then I really want an oak in my garden too (one of the acorns of the what I think is the northern red oak now has started to grow).

But everything was calm and quiet on the ground.

These cranes flew just above my cottage.

Even though I´m pretty sure I will be long gone before those trees are that big I really don´t have the space in my little garden 🙂 🙂 🙂 But I think I´ll leave that for the coming generation to solve 🙂 🙂 🙂 By the way, does anyone know how red mulberries tastes? I´ve read that they taste anything from water to delicious 🙂 🙂

The flowers on the Redberried Elderberry bushes will soon turn yellow and start to flower.

The first primulas are showing on the ground.

I think we better take that walk now before the rain might be pouring down here. There´s a fire in the stove even if I don´t need it, the jackdaws are very active now to find a good chimney to build a nest in 🙂 🙂                                                                                                         Have a great day now!

  1. Hi Christer,
I know what you mean about planting trees that you will not live long enough to see grown. I would love a beech tree in my yard but I worry that if I plant one, the next person to own the land would cut it down because it would be “in the way” of developing the property. I guess I will stick with the black walnuts and maples that are already here.
Do people ever build decoy chimneys for the jackdaws to use instead of the real ones? 🙂
    Have a great day.

    • Hi Caryn!
It would be sad if someone cut down something I once planted, but hopefully I will be gone by then 🙂 Si I´ll plant these trees anyway and hope for the best 🙂 🙂 I had forgotten about the Black walnuts I´ve sown too 🙂 Well if they germinate no one will notice them beside the others anyway 🙂 🙂 🙂

I´ve heard of one person making decoys but I don´t know the result yet. Perhaps they want to live close to humans so most predators keep away?

      Have a great day now!
      Christer.

      Christer.

  3. hi christer! wonderful photos. i love the close up of the pussy willow. you are warmer than we are. it is amazing how fast some trees grow. i over planted all of my gardens to the point of having to remove some already. i planted 2 tiny sticks 5 years ago at our other house. i bought them for 1.00 at the end of the season. now i have two big trees and i am not sure if they are in good locations. tomorrow we get really warm for one day with big storms. typical spring for us! joyce

    • Hi Joyce!
I do like that photograph too!
Yes some trees grows surprisingly fast, but our climate slows down most things rather much. Especially those that are on the limit of what they can cope with up here in the north. But I have to say that we never can buy trees so cheap, they rather replant them in slightly bigger pots and hope they can sell them next year.

I do hope the storm doesn´t to bad!

      Have a great day now!
      Christer.

  4. Nova must be wondering if her Cone is a permanent attachment. And why her brothers are not wearing cones, too!! Great close-ups of the pussy willows and mulberries! Looking forward to more crane photos! Enjoy your day!!!

    • Hi Robin!
I was just thinking the same thing earlier this morning 🙂 But I think she understands the connection with the wound on her belly. I can say that she´s recovering fast, today she wanted to run around and play with the boys, so I had to stop her 🙂

      Have a great day now!
      Christer.

  5. Jaz is right about trees growing FAST. I planted a Norfolk Pine a neighbor gave me as a seedling in a styrofoam cup. In four years it had towered over my 3-story house! Everyone laughed when I planted it towards middle of the yard. It was so cute. Then, when it’s outer branches almost touched the house, there was little laughter. 😎 I think the boys sense that Nova is not at her strongest, right now, and are being nice to her; no?

I’m sure with the ‘warm’ weather you are experiencing, you have all your windows open! 😎 Keep warm and enjoy your tea. Rainy days are great reading days.

    • Hi Sharlene!
You do forget that we only have 1,5 hours of summer here 🙂 🙂 Our climate is rather tough so they won´t grow that fast up here. Even if winter won´t get cold the lack of light will slow down the trees rather early in the autumn. Especially north american trees seems to have it extra tough here for some reason I don´t know.

It´s not that warm here 🙂 🙂 But the radiators keep calm anyway 🙂 🙂

      have a great day now!
      Christer.

  6. Christer,
I love seeing the cranes, an unfamiliar sight for me. My spring flowers are blooming, and I am delighted.

I feel bad for poor Nova. Gracie never had one of those when she was spayed, but then she didn’t seem to notice.

    • Hi kat!
I love when the cranes comes here every spring and of course those nesting here comes all summer close to the cottage 🙂

It´s a very large wound so I doubt Nova would leave it alone for very long 🙂 🙂 But Orvar never needed any collar when he was neutered, the collar just made him panic every time had to use it 🙂 🙂 Hector had to use it but then again he never minded the collar 🙂

      Have a great day now!
      Christer.

  7. Christer, nice “family portraits in the last 2 shots – only missing yourself and another cat (Teodor?). The rain has cleared here for today and Grenville is outside working and very happily doing so. He’s been inside much too long this past week with all the rainy days. Let us know how the red mulberries taste if you venture to try them once they’re ripe. ENjoy the weekend or what’s left of it.

    • Hi beatrice!
I never stuck on photographs 🙂 and Teodor preferred to stay indoors sleeping 🙂

The rain only lasted a few minutes and it was wonderful outside when we had our walk. But the ground is still frozen a bit down so no work there yet for me.

I´m afraid it will take some years until I eventually get some berries, but if/when that happens I will tell You all 🙂

      Have a great day now!
      Christer.

  8. The first photo reminds me of a UFO. That’s the sun playing tricks. And now we learn that Ms Nova Cone does not like to walk in mud. How many times have I told you she like high heel shoes. Somebody call PLAYBOY. Great photos today Christer, thanks!

    • Hi Z&M!
It would have been fun though if it was an UFO 🙂 🙂 🙂 But I think a pair of rubber boots would be better since it is muddy everywhere 🙂 🙂

      Have a great day now!
      Christer.

      Christer.
